A Very Lexie Weekend

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Good music for a good cause- that's the idea behind "A Very Lexie Weekend", coming to Sky City on February 20th and 21st.

Alexis Noelle Colohan-Cannon Haworth's life was abruptly cut short after an automobile accident in south Georgia last April. She was a 21 year old college student and Navy wife who spent time volunteering at meal kitchens, animal shelters, and charity events.

In turn, "Lexie's Legacy" was created to continue that tradition of giving.

Here's what the description on the myspace site says:

"The Lexie's Legacy Memorial Scholarship Fund will assist married CSRA women in their quest to complete collegiate goals. Our hope is to have this scholarship available to qualified applicants by early 2009 with goals to expand to follow."

Lexie's father is actively involved with the local music scene. You might know him as "Stoney" from Lokal Loudness, the fan/webzine that's been around in one form or another since 1992. Many of the events benefiting Lexie are music-based, such as the recent "Acoustipalooza" at the Loft, and December's "Rocking the Stocking" at Sector 7G.

Lexie's birthday is on February 10th, and the Sky City weekend marks the occasion with a pair of great events.

On Friday the 20th, a benefit show will double as a CD release for the Lexie's Legacy compilation. It's a disc featuring all kinds of local and regional artists, and you get a free copy by just paying the 5 dollar cover. The show features local bands Shotgun Opera, L.i.E, and Ajustmentz, along with Columbia's Suhgarim.

Saturday is the annual Lokal Loudness awards show- 16 awards will be given out, with performances from Chairleg, 48 Volt, Jacob Beltz, and Allison Foster. I believe this show has been going for on for a decade now.

All benefits from the weekend gigs will go to the "Lexie's Legacy" scholarship fund. It's really a great event with a variety of bands. Be it rock, metal, or acoustic, you'll find it at these shows. There's really no excuse not to show up- it's for a good cause and I can vouch for the quality of the lineup. (I've shared the stage with 5 of the 8 groups on the bill)
