An update on the breaking news in Aiken that we've been following all day:
Aiken Department of Public Safety (ADPS) investigators, with cooperation from South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents, have taken into custody a suspect in the shooting of an (ADPS) officer. A press conference is expected around 7:00pm and WJBF News Channel 6 crews will be there.
The shooting happened this morning around 7:30 near Eustice Park, when the officer was called to check on suspicious activity in the area. WJBF News Channel 6 has confirmed that the officer is at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, on life support.
Agents followed leads to Batesburg, South Carolina where they took into custody 26-year-old Joshua Termaine Jones.
"The support of the Department, especially that officer's family, and we will let you know furthur information as soon as it's available. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division," said Sergeant Jason Mahoney, with the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Right now, Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigators are on the scene of a murder on Woodsedge Drive in Augusta.
There's no word on who the victim, or if there is a suspect, but WJBF News Channel 6 is investigating whether this murder is connected with the suspect who has been taken into custody in Aiken County involved in the shooting of the officer this morning.
WJBF crews are on the scene of both investigations.
