A long-time Augusta firefighter is now off the job.

Lieutenant Melvin Harris is accused of taking cash for fire inspections from businesses last year and not turning in the money.

Augusta city officials say Harris was suspended a week ago, and he resigned from the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department on Friday.

The city attorney's office says all information regarding Harris has been forwarded to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for investigation.
