Clearwater Finishing Plant Fire Under Control

Fire at Clearwater Plant

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A fire in an old abandoned building on Belvedere Road raging after more than 12 hours, shutting down the streets, forcing drivers to take alternate routes...but let's start from the beginning.

Neighbor: "It was a real loud noise in our house, it shook our windows"

The loud noise was oxygen tanks… exploding.

Bath Fire Chief Johnson: "That's one of the things they heard last night that uhm, made an explosion, it was some type of LP tank or settling tank or something like that."

Chief Johnson says he's not sure what caused the suspicious fire.

Bath Fire Chief Johnson: "Uhm, we're not sure how it started."

It seems all that's left are piles of brick, cinder blocks and metal… and because of the unpredictable fire, crews are now letting the building burn to the ground.

Bath Fire Chief Johnson: "I’m not going to put anybody inside there with the walls the way they are and stuff like that, its contained inside the building so we're just going to let it burn."

There have been talks about the Clearwater Finishing Plant turning into an assisted living facility but as the bricks crumble, the owners and/or the county is now faced with what to do with the 83 year old building.
