More than 1,000 police officers and hundreds of others have gathered in Aiken for the funeral for fallen Aiken Department of Public Safety Master Corporal Sandra (Sandy) Rogers.
The funeral was held around 1:00 p.m. at the USC Aiken Convocation Center. After the funeral a procession, flanked by thousands of people offering support, led from there to the Aiken Department of Public Safety headquarters in downtown Aiken. Rogers' coffin has been transferred to a caisson, which will make its way to historic Bethany Cemetery, where Rogers will be buried.
Corporal Rogers was shot and killed early Saturday morning in the Eustis Park area of Aiken. Joshua Tremaine Jones, 26, is accused of her killing.
Rogers is the second Aiken Public Safety officer to be killed in the line of duty in a little over one month. Master Officer Scotty Richardson was shot and killed in late December. Stephon Carter is accused in his death.
Jones is also accused of killing his live-in girlfriend, 21-year-old Cayce Vice, before Rogers' death. We are told by family members and friend of Vice that she was in the early stages of pregnancy.
We will have more on Rogers' funeral in our Wednesday evening newscasts.
