***UPDATED at 9:46 A.M. on FEBRUARY 2nd***
According to Chief Alonzo Williams, of the Waynesboro Police Department, a Waynesboro civilian reserve police officer was killed in an accident involving a logging truck on Wednesday morning, February 1st.
Chief Williams' press release is below:
"On February 1, 2012, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to Drone Rd. and Hwy 24 to investigate a motor vehicle accident.
A Ford Ranger pick up truck operated by Waynesboro Police Department, Civilian Reserve Police Officer, Raymond B. Bosher, 65 years of age, was traveling on Drone Road, approaching Hwy 24W. Officer Bosher turned left onto Hwy 24 eastbound into the path of an 18 wheeler log truck. Officer Bosher succumbed to his injuries and died and was later pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Susan Salemi.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol and Burke County Sheriff’s Office. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Department of Motor Carriers and the Burke County EMA.
Officer Bosher has been a reserve officer of the Waynesboro Police Department since 2008. He also worked as a gunsmith with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. He was a retired police chief in the North Charleston, SC area. He dedicated a great deal of time to the Waynesboro Police Department, Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Waynesboro Fire Department and the Burke County EMA and was a true humanitarian. He was 100% police officer and cared about those he served. He worked diligently and was very tenacious in his efforts to combat crime and help the citizens of Waynesboro and Burke County. Officer Bosher offered firearms courses to law enforcement officers and civilians.
We are devastated by the passing of Officer Bosher. There is a void in our ranks and we ask your prayers as we mourn the loss of a good officer, a true friend and a great public servant. Equally devastated are the police explorers, Citizens on Patrol (COPS), and others whom he came into contact with each week. Officer Bosher’s dedication to this department and community is second to none and the painful void he leaves behind will be difficult to fill. He will be remembered by his fellow officers for his brotherly love, his vigilance, and his unwavering loyalty to this profession. He will not be forgotten.
Our chaplains have been activated to assist our officers through this most difficult time. The Waynesboro Police Department and its members stand firmly with the Bosher family during this difficult time and ask the public’s support."
