Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigators tell WJBF News Channel 6 a local attorney has been arrested after beind observed passing tobacco and marijuana products to an inmate. Investigators say the incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the Richmond County Jail.
Sidney "Chuck" Jones, 59, of Connector Road in Graniteville, has been charged with Influencing/Threatening a Witness, Distribution of Marijuana and Possessing, and Giving or Having Delivered Marijuana to an Inmate.
The investigation began when investigators received information that Jones was having a witness to a case against his son, Tyler Jones, falsify statements in an effort to assist in Tyler Jones' case. Tyler Jones was arrested in Aiken County, where he is currently housed, for his involvement in the armed robbery of a Waffle House earlier this year. Upon opening the investigation, investigators further received information that Chuck Jones was smuggling marijuana and tobacco products to an inmate at the Richmond County Jail. Armed with that information, Investigators watched Jones’ contact with an inmate during a visit and witnessed him provide the inmate with marijuana and tobacco products Wednesday evening.
Jones is licensed to practice law in South Carolina and Georgia, and his office is located on Silver Bluff Road, in Aiken. He is currently housed at the Richmond County jail.
On a side note, ballistics testing has confirmed that a firearm used by Tyler Jones in the Aiken County Waffle House robbery matches the firearm used at the Waffle House Robbery in Richmond County on River Watch Parkway on March 23rd. Tyler Jones will be charged in connection with that robbery later Thursday, but will remain housed at the Aiken County Detention Center until his case there is adjudicated.
