The Warren County High School Screaming Devils are back on the football field now three days after the fight that sent their head coach David Daniel to the hospital. Last Friday, the team beat Hancock Central High School during homecoming in Sparta, but the victory on the field has been overshadowed by the violent brawl that took place after the game.
Warren County High School Principal Kaveous Preston says, “The focus should have been on the game. It was a hard fought game on the field and unfourtiantly some people took it upon themselves to cause and incident off the field.”
Preston says the Blue Devil team was attacked outside their locker room. He says several Warren County students were sprayed with pepper spray and Coach Daniel was hit in the face with a football helmet. The incident is now under investigation by the school system and the Georgia High School Association. But Preston says the fight is in the past and students in Warren County are focusing on this week’s game.
Preston says, “If we’re thinking about the past we can’t concerante on the future. Let what happened work out in the system and let the system handle it, and we feel confident that it will work itself out.”
It’s been a hard year for the Warren County football program. At the beginning of the season former head Coach Marleau Blount resigned facing allegations he let players practice without physicals. Blount now works as an assistant coach at the Hancock County school accused in the assault.
As for Coach Daniel, he’s now in the process of recovering, but still faces several more surgeries to repair his face. When we talked to the coach over the phone, he told us he was ready to be back on the field. Preston says it’s clear his team wants their coach back too.
Preston says, “We want him to concentrate on getting well. He’s a great guy, a spirited guy and the kids really love him and take to him. I’ve had a lot of phone calls from the kids wanting to know how he’s doing. We’ve had a lot of people wanting to know how he’s doing so I wanted everybody to know he’s doing fine.”
WJBF News Channel 6 tried to get in touch with the Hancock County Sheriff for an update on the investigation. We went to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and were told to leave a message, but we’ve yet to hear back from them.
