Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Inc. announces the selection of six Women of Distinction and nine Young Women of Distinction who have distinguished themselves through service to family, career and community.
A luncheon in their honor will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011 in the River Room of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
The annual Women of Distinction event formally honors each female leader among her friends, family, peers and community. WJBF News Anchor Jennie Montgomery will emcee. Proceeds from the event help provide the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to area girls who will be our future Women of Distinction.
The 2011 Girl Scout Women of Distinction represent six categories:
Arts: Phyllis Giddens
Business: Phyllis Cochran
Community Service: Dr. Ruth Crawford
Education: Mildred Blackburn
Health: Dr. Miriam Atkins
Professions: Dr. Connie Drisko
The 2011 Young Women of Distinction are from local middle and high schools: Hannah Price, Anneliese Holland, Ashley Behrend, Kaia Major, Rachel Olivia Taylor, Lily Jaremski, Angela Williams, Elyssa Melton and Rebecca Beaird.
Girl Scout CEO Margaret Skene said, “We’re encouraging girls to look at the lives of women and see what gains we’ve made over the past 100 years. When Juliette Low founded Girl Scouts, women did not have the right to vote, rarely were educated, and seldom worked outside the home. We’d like to think that the Girl Scout Leadership Experience has helped propel women forward in society – giving them the courage, confidence and character to try and to succeed in education and in the workplace.”
Tickets are $40 per person and are available at the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia office.
