The birthplace of two of our area's largest hospitals is being reborn. Augusta’s old "Widow's Home" used to house University Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia Health Sciences University). Wednesday, it "officially" became Christ Community Health Services of Augusta. Count on News Channel 6's Cory McGinnis for the story.

Christ Community Health Services of Augusta, also known as CCHS, is serving those in the CSRA with no medical insurance.

I took a tour of the new facility and spoke with one patient who says she is pleased about the services she received there.

Ruth Hailey, patient: "I was stressed and I was praying that the Lord would just send somebody."

Ruth Hailey had limited options on where to go to get good quality medical care.

Hailey Patient: "I was at a point where I just didn't know what I was going to do, what I could do."

On Wednesday, Christ Community Health Services of Augusta dedicated the renovated "Widow’s Home" building for people who don't have health insurance.

Ronald Skenes, Christ Community Health Services of Augusta director: "We can provide them primary care, they can afford and we can take care of things like cholesterol and diabetes, and high blood pressure and keep folks out of the emergency room, and help them get healthy."

Skenes took me on a private tour of the new building, showing me the 12-exam room primary care health center.

Skenes: "These are more patient exam rooms, and this will be a physician/nurse work station where they'll be taking of patients in these three exam rooms and they'll be working here, we use electronic medical records so everything is on the computer so they'll take there laptop in and that goes into their permanent records, so we got a total of 12 rooms broken into 4 three room pods."

Since 2007, CCHS of Augusta has logged more than 25,000 patient encounters. More than 75% of those patients have no medical insurance and are seen on a sliding fee scale that starts at $25 for an office visit.

Meanwhile, this patient is thankful for the medical service and the new building...

Hailey: "I was excited, I had no idea it was of such magnitude, but, they've been excited about it for awhile and of course I'm excited for them..."

The facility will officially open to the public in mid August; we will keep you updated on the official date.
