The City of Aiken Visitor Center and Train Museum opened a gift shop Wednesday to help pay off some of its loans.
The shop sells train-themed souvenirs like toys and t-hirts. The Visitor Center opened in downtown Aiken last summer, funded by both private and taxpayer money.
The Visitor Center was built to model the original Aiken Train Depot constructed in the 1800s. The goal is to promote tourism to Aiken.
Tammy Cook, Train Museum Gift Shop chairwoman: "This is a really big deal for us today. We've worked really hard, the Friends of Aiken Railroad Depot, this is to help work on paying off our loan and to give the visitors to the museum a chance to have a momento to have from the Aiken Railroad Depot.”
Money made from the gift shop will also help pay to complete the project. The next phase is to furnish two train cars into dining cars.
