A call to 911 may get you help faster in Columbia County.

That's because the county is using a 3D mapping company to capture location data.

Columbia County has nearly 2800 roads that stretch more than 1100 miles.

"You get a lot of attention. Several times people think I am a storm chaser,” said Luke Pulaski, who works for Earthmine.

For the last 3 weeks, Luke Pulaski has cruised every one of those streets.

'Watch out low hanging cables, low hanging branches, don't want to hit anything while I am driving around,” said Pulaski.

Pulaski captured images for the county. The whole idea is to help utility companies, property assessors and even 911 dispatchers.

8 cameras capture 360 degree views of locations. The county uses that information to find out building heights and how many traffic lights are there at a given location.

"We can look at things like curbs, curb heights, how tall they are, how tall the lights are,” said Mary Howard, GIS manager for Columbia County.

The 3D mapping tool can locate fire hydrants and count how many speed signs there are in the county.

The technology will save the county money and time, because now county leaders won’t have to make multiple trips to review information.

"We also hope for development purposes so developers can come in and see what's existing in the area,” said Howard.

And now that every street is digitized, the company will process the pictures to make them 3D ready -- so every street in Columbia County will have 3D view by October. But the street scenes didn't come without challenges.

"A lot of dogs do not like you driving down the street in front of their houses and will come barking,” said Pulaski.

It cost Columbia County $75,000 for the project. Richmond County is also looking at mapping its streets with the 3D technology.
