The face of education is changing. Public school is moving online.
Allison Yawn is one of the many teachers who traded in what she calls the 'brick and mortar' public school for cyber teaching after seven years experience in Columbia County School district.
"I actually control everything in the classroom," explains Yawn. "I can turn the children's chat on or off. I can take their pen privileges away."
For this eighth grade math teacher, her classroom is her home.
Yawn teaches live over the internet using powerpoint lessons combined with K-12 brand curriculum.
"When the children log-in they have a daily plan. The learning coach is there to make sure the children are doing what's expected," said Yawn.
The Georgia Cyber Academy is a state-funded public school with curriculum set to meet federal and state education standards.
6,000 kids are enrolled in Georgia Cyber Academy statewide. Yawn says about 160 students in are educated online in Columbia and Richmond counties.
Field trips are included in the lesson plan at least twice a month to help boost to face-to-face interaction between student, parent and teacher.
Cyber school is all Jenny Allen's two kids have ever known.
Her 7th and 4th grade children started cyber school in Kansas before moving to Georgia.
"It makes them feel grown up, high-tech... it's the future," said Allen.
Georgia Cyber Academy offers instruction for grades K-through-9. Find more information here.
