It was a great gig for Wycliffe Gordon.
The Augusta area native, and jazz great, along with well known entertainer Niki Haris performed at the Veterans Day program at Episcopal Day School, on Walton Way, in Augusta.
“Had a father who was in the Air Force, having a brother currently serving in Afghanistan, and a brother who is in the Navy. It means a lot,” said Gordon.
With Gordon on the piano, and Harris on vocals, the two performed the National Anthem, and God Bless America, at the event.
With a relative fighting overseas the songs are even more inspiring.
“'God Bless America', I could barely get through it because the words mean so much to me now,” said Haris.
And it was a meaningful day downtown at the annual Veterans Day parade, as the crowds saluted those who served.
“It's really kind of special and enjoyable,” said Kevin Schehl, the Garrison Command Sergeant Major at Fort Gordon.
But Sandy Undermyer wasn't here because he wanted to he said he had to.
He was carrying a protest sign, just him and his dog, outside the Evans office of Congressman Paul Broun, he wants Broun to stop hurting vets and start helping.
Undermyer never served his country but he said he gave up his Veterans Day to support those who did.
“Veterans deserve our respect some of them have fought, lost limbs, they're blind, they come back here they expect that their representative has their back,” he said.
We live in a country where you can picket and protest because of our veterans, and because of our veterans some chose to parade downtown and wave the flag, and thanks to our veterans others sang their hearts out for the land that we love.
