Blythe, GA -- There are 55 dogs taking a 20-hour trip from Blythe, Georgia to Salem, Massachusetts to find new homes. So far this year, 260 dogs have traveled north.
90 of Georgia's 159 counties have an animal control office. "Old Fella" Burke County Animal Rescue is trying to make life safer for these puppies and for the community.
Bruce Storm, president, Burke County Animal Rescue: "People look at this as saving animals. We've discovered that what we're doing is the safety, health, and welfare of the children and adults in Burke County because we find 85 percent of the animals we handle through our spay and neuter program have not had a rabies shot."
Storm says this will be the last truck of puppies to head up North if they don't get any financial help soon. It cost "Old Fella" $42,000 in medical care to get the dogs to Massachusetts.
