A one-mile stretch of Martintown Road between Currytown Road and Briggs Road remains closed in Edgefield County after a water main break damaged the road.
Around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, Edgefield County Water and Sewer crews came out to Martintown Road, near Briggs Road, to find a broken four-inch line gushing water. The line was repaired and water pressure restored after about eight hours of work.
About 100 residents lost water pressure and will have to boil their water for drinking and cooking for at least the next 24 hours. Edgefield County Water and Sewer crews have placed flyers on those homes.
SCDOT is still assessing the damage to Martintown Road. Chunks of asphalt have been washed away and there are visible tears on the roadway.
Right now, there is a 10-mile detour around the break, using Briggs Road to Sweetwater Road to Mealing Road to Currytown Road.
