It's been 11 months in the making, and every step off the bus for these 300 Fort Gordon soldiers...was one step closer to seeing their families.
As the anticipation builds...from inside, Clairie Huff anxiously waits to see her son.
Clairie Huff, Son is home from Iraq: “Here they come...alright they're coming, they're coming!”
And then the moment this mother has been waiting for...
Clairie Huff: “Go Joel!”
With screams filling the gym...the time is finally here.
Sgt. Larry McGill, Home from Iraq: “It's been a long time and it's nice to see them again.”
Michelle McGill, Husband home from Iraq: “Oh happiness, yeah yeah yeah!”
Barclay Bishop, Reporting: “What's the first thing you're going to do with the baby when you get home?”
Patrick Brown: “Take her to Chuck E. Cheese!”
Elise Maygreen, Husband home from Iraq: “It's really exciting, it's just nice to be together as a family.”
But even before seeing their families, at Augusta's Bush Field these soldiers got a special surprise from Louisville's head basketball coach, Rick Pitino, in town for the Nike Peach Jam tournament.
Brice Maygreen, Home from Iraq: “He said welcome home, I'm grateful that I could be here to see you guys come home, and it was neat to see someone like that here.”
For many like Clairie's son, Joel, this was their first tour overseas, fighting for our freedom, but happy to be home.
Spc. Joel Huff, Home from Iraq: “"Oh it's great, to be with family, it's been a long time coming. We had to endure, hot heat, sand, no luxuries, everything was an inconvenience. Yeah I'm happy to be back, the first thing I noticed was green grass and fresh air."”
Clairie Huff: “This moment just makes it all worth it, i mean it just makes it all worth it...every second!”
Thankfully, there were no casualties in this group. A second group of 300 from the 35th signal brigade will be returning to Fort Gordon Thursday afternoon from Iraq.
