AUGUSTA, GA - Eight employees and one certified nursing assistant student at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home were sent to local emergency rooms Wednesday morning after another employee inadvertently mixed chemicals causing a release of noxious fumes.
The incident took place around 9 a.m. when a dietary assistant was in the cafeteria mixing chemicals for cleaning. The mixture caused fumes to fill the first floor of the facility and several employees complained of respiratory problems, nausea and dizziness.
Administrators at the facility called 911 and first responders from Richmond County, including the HAZMAT team, were called to the scene.
Six of the people affected were transferred to the MCGHealth Emergency Department while the other three were taken to University Hospital. The six at MCGHealth are listed in good condition, while the three at University Hospital are being treated in the minor treatment area of the emergency room, according to hospital spokespersons.
No patients have displayed any symptoms associated with the fumes, said GA War Director of Nursing Kay Roland.
The student is enrolled at Tender Care Training School.
The Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, operated through an interagency agreement between the Medical College of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, is located at 1101 15th Street.
