Augusta, GA -- It's a new order for the court, as Augusta Commissioners work out a compromise for the new Judicial Center.
The complex under construction will be known as the Augusta Judicial Center and Judge John H. Ruffin Court House.
The deal to honor Judge Ruffin at the center came after city leaders first voted down a proposal, Tuesday afternoon, to name the entire complex after the first African-American to serve as a judge in the Augusta Judicial Circuit. But, after a closed-door session, Commissioners agreed on the twin names for the center.
Commissioner Corey Johnson, Augusta, GA: "We came back and it happened, and I just want to thank my colleagues, thank everybody who supported it. I want to thank the supporters who came out in honor of Judge Ruffin and we showed a sign of unity, today. Of course, it didn't go unanimous, but in some cases, it only takes six votes to get it done and we got it accomplished."
Commissioner Johnson thanked Commissioner Joe Bowles, who first voted no for the naming, but then switched it in favor of the Ruffin Court House.
