Augusta, GA--- Specialist Natasha Lawton served in the army for two years, and after receiving a life-threatening diagnosis, she needed treatment from a VA center.
Spcl. Natasha Lawton: “I was diagnosed with fibroid tumors.”
At the time she lived in Virginia but now she's in the Garden City. And she is thrilled about being a patient at the new VA women's clinic in downtown Augusta. The clinic had its grand opening Thursday. It serves the growing number of women veterans across the nation.
Dr. Yevgeny Kilman: “We were told what to except and we were told that up to 20% of new recruits within the military are female. So of course, very soon we will see an increase in those numbers in the VA system.”
Dr. Yevgeny Kilman says there was a time when the military did not have any resources for female veterans such as pregnancy and women health issues.
Dr. Yevngeny Kilman: “A lot of conditions, a lot of diseases women specific and it was hard for them to find help within the VA when those services were not available.”
The center has a nursing staff, a full-time gynecologist and a primary doctor. Patients will be treated with new equipment and can enjoy complete privacy in a small setting exam room. Other female veterans we talked to say they've waited a long time for this.
“I started coming to this clinic when it opened up uptown and I think it was a great idea.”
