Here's a question for you: can 10 million people not say a single curse word for an entire week? One California town is issuing a proclamation to make the first week in March, "No Cussing Week." Meet the 15-year-old high school boy who started it all, with a "No Cussing Club" at school.
Southern Pasadena, CA -- McKay Hatch is 15...doing spots on Jay Leno...running the celebrity circuit.
McKay Hatch, started "No Cussing Club" at school: "It's kinda fun being in a green room. You get free soda."
Reporter: "What do you think about getting this much publicity?"
McKay Hatch: "I think it's great...I'm just getting out my message more and more."
Hatch's rock star status was launched by a message he feared...might be considered uncool.
McKay Hatch: "When I got in middle school, all my friends started cussing...cussing like every other word."
Phelicia Hatch, McKay's mom: "He was just like, everybody is using the cuss words...they feel if they don't, they're not cool. I told him, 'you have a choice.'
McKay Hatch: "So, I challeneged my friends...if you want to hangout with me, I don't want to hear you cuss."
Hatch's friends not only stopped... they wanted to influence others and started a "No Cussing Club."
Kara Finnstrom, Southern Pasedena, CA: "Words have a lot of power...they can determine where you go in life...or who's going to be your friends."
The little club Hatch started here at his high school caught on...other schools started forming their own chapters. And, his club has grown to more than 30,000 members...students from all fifty states and all around the world.
Hatch has a website, a book, even a rap song on YouTube..."if you want to hang with me, don't cuss...don't cuss..."
And, his hometown of South Pasadena has declared this "No Cussing Week."
McKay Hatch: "People can really...get their point across without cussing."
Hatch believes the same self-control students show by not cussing...can help them later say no to other social pressures, like drinking and drugs.
Reporter: "Great job..."
McKay Hatch: "This kinda is what keeps me going."
But there's also been a backlash...offensive emails...online taunts...even death threats that have gotten police involved. Hatch won't be bullied into silence...Words, he says, are just too important.
McKay Hatch: "Instead of using words to put people down...hopefully try to use language that will uplift people."
Young McKay has an impressive resume...and lots more on his "no cussing" website. You can see all of his television arrearances and hear his radio interviews, one with Ryan Seacrest, even!.
There's even an online store where you can buy his books and DVD, and even those rubber bracelets, only in orange, for no cussing.
