(Augusta) -- A Richmond County jailer is the one behind bars, accused of selling cigarettes and marijuana to inmates.
Deputy Michael Arrington, of Grovetown, was arrested Thursday morning at the Richmond County jail. Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength says, as recently as Thursday morning, Arrington sold marijuana to an inmate.
Arrington had been under investigation for about a month. The Sheriff says he will not tolerate illegal activity by his officers.
Sheriff Ronnie Strength, Richmond County Sheriff's Office:“We in law enforcement are no different than anybody else. We must also stay within the guidelines of the law and we have no problem investigating our own and taking whatever actions are warranted.”
Arrington had worked at the Sheriff's Office since 2007. He is being held at the jail away from the general population.
He is facing felony charges of selling marijuana and crossing a guard line with drugs. The Sheriff says there are no indications that other guards were involved.
