SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A construction worker at an Air Force Base in South Carolina has died after he was struck by a beam.
Multiple media outlets reported that 38-year-old Brian Lowery of Copperfield, Tenn., died in a construction accident at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter on Wednesday.
Lowery was helping with the construction of the new 3rd Army headquarters that is moving from Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga.
Deputy Sumter County Coroner Rob Lybrand says Lowery was on an I-beam 20 feet above the ground when another I-beam being lowered by a crane hit him.
Lowery worked for Dixie Erectors, based in the Atlanta-area.
An autopsy is planned Thursday in Newberry.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating.
The 3rd Army headquarters move is expected to be completed in late 2011.
