FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - An icon for Interstate 95 motorists is celebrating a milestone, but it's also facing challenges from competitors and a need to make upgrades and improvements.
'The Morning News of Florence' reports that South of the Border has remained a roadside attraction for 60 years. It features more than a dozen shops, six restaurants, a small amusement park and a motel with 300 rooms.
But travelers and employees acknowledge that it's not the same place it used to be.
Public relations head Suzanne Pelt said the difference is that South of the Border used to be the only place between Miami and New York where everyone could stay. Now, she says there is a lot of competition.
