MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Thousands of South Carolinians lined up in chilly weather for a chance to make Christmas a little brighter.
'The Sun News of Myrtle Beach' reported that people waited in their cars Saturday morning, arriving as early as 4 a.m. for Gary Bingham's second annual "One Day Can Make a Difference" giveaway.
Many of those who braved the 40-degree temperatures said the help was more needed this year than ever before. Some had been laid off or lost seasonal work because of the economy; others had taken jobs with less pay and fewer dollars to spend on Christmas.
Bingham said while his goal was to try and offer free clothes, toys and a hot turkey dinner to about 2,000 people this year, more than 3,000 showed up for help.
