Double Trouble: 2 Trackhoes Stuck In Martinez Pond

Double trouble. You've probably seen them. We're talking about the 2 big trackhoes stuck in Bowen Pond, in Martinez. That's right behind Stevens Pointe, and West Lake subdivision. So how'd they get there, and what happens next? WJBF News Channel 6's Barclay Bishop reports.

Martinez, GA -- Dr. Al Stocks, neighbor: "We'd like to go out there and put lights on them for the holidays."

They're the latest additions to Bowen Pond in Dr. Al Stocks' backyard. These 2 massive trackhoes stuck, with nowhere to go.

Jim Walton, neighbor: "One morning, a couple of weeks ago, I came out and one of the machines, the one on the left there, was in the process of sinking."

Dr. Stocks: "They were going out to apparently scoop out the silt and put it in trucks and haul it away, and the first excavator sank. They sent a second one out to rescue it, and it sank, as well. Dumb and dumber, I guess."

The trackhoes were stuck, but the drivers made it out. Jim Walton says he saw the whole thing.

Walton: "They had a little small john boat to get them out. It was like huge technology supported by small john boat."

Now, both trackhoes just lay on their sides in about 6 to 8 feet of silt...silt that was supposed to be removed by a private contractor out of Atlanta, hired by the county, so they can begin a million dollar dredging project.

Walton: "It's actually become somewhat of a tourist trap, we have a lot more people riding around the neighborhood."

There's no telling when these sinking attractions will be pulled out...in the meantime, neighbors say they'll just wait and embrace the pond's new centerpiece.

Dr. Stocks: "The question is, can they get them out, can they get them out intact? If so, when and how?"

Those are the same questions we asked. Unfortunately, the project manager was out of the office, Thursday. However, we were told, by other officials, that it's just a waiting game right now to get the water level down before they can get in there...and with the recent rain, that's not making it very easy.
