HAMPTON, SC -- Three men charged in connection with a home invasion and kidnapping of an elderly woman were refused bond in a Hampton County court Wednesday afternoon.

Nathaniel Harris and Stevie Aiken heard the charges against them: first degree burglary, kidnapping, assault and battery with intent to kill, grand larceny, felon in possession of a weapon and armed robbery. Their bond hearing will happen in Hampton County General Sessions court at a later date.

Stevie’s brother, Derrick, is charged with being an accessory before and after the fact. The judge declined to set bond for him.

Derrick Aiken burst into tears at the hearing, telling the judge, “I am not a criminal.“

Margaret Gooding’s family was at the hearing. Her brother-in-law Oddis Gooding said he believes the suspects should face the stiffest penalties for what they’ve done. He said Margaret Gooding has been released from the hospital and is recovering at his home.

The three suspects are expected to have their next court appearance in February.

HAMPTON, S.C. (AP) - Bond has been denied for three men charged in the home invasion and kidnapping of a 78-year-old South Carolina woman later found wounded in her car trunk.

Multiple media outlets reported that a judge made that decision Wednesday for Stevie Lamont Aiken, Derrick Ladel Aiken and Nathaniel Harris, all of Walterboro. They face a variety of charges.

Hampton County Sheriff T.C. Smalls says Margaret Gooding of the Miley community was found Monday in her car near Walterboro and about 25 miles away from home, 14 hours after she was abducted.

Authorities say Gooding fought back, firing shots from a gun of her own. She was shot in the abdomen, but is expected to recover.

A man discovered her when he investigated a car parked by the road for several hours.
