CSRA Program Helps Brain Injury Patients Get Back On Track

CSRA Program Helps Brain Injury Patients Get Back On Track

Traumatic brain injuries are a major cause of disabilities worldwide. Many are caused by falls, or accidents. Right here in the CSRA, there's a program that offers those with brain injuries, or disabilities, the chance to get back into the swing of things. WJBF News Channel 6's Kimberely Scott has the story.

North Augusta, SC -- Making a strike in this bowling alley means more than getting an X on the scoreboard.

Liz Parish, Harrison Heights Assisted Living: "What we do with people who have had a physical disability is get them back out into the community doing things that they use to do before their injury."

Richard Scarbough suffered a brain injury, and like many of the individuals bowling with him, they're proving a disability doesn't have to hinder your life.

richard Scarbough, participant: "This is the world to me to be able to interact with the community and being with friends, and people like Liz Parish, and Walton staff. They do a lot for us."

Allowing Richard and his friends the opportunity to socialize and to have fun is what this therapy is all about.

Parish: "Well, bowling should speak for itself. They're just all into it, they're cheering each other on and they have each other's back, they help each other. It helps them feel good again, it makes them feel like they're human beings again."

Statistics show that many people with disabilities sometimes isolate themselves and withdraw from society. Programs like this, offered through Walton Rehab and the Harrison Heights Assisted Living facility are equipped to make a difference in so many lives.

Parish: "It enhances the quality of their life, especially with their disability. It enhances their life like no other."

Richard: "It really gave me the sense to say that everything is going to be ok, everything is going to be ok, just because I have a disability, my disability doesn't have me."

And Richard is certainly proving that nothing can hold him back.

Walton Rehab and Harrison Heights Assisted Living Facility offer a day program for those who have disabilities. Activities are scheduled Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
