Martinez, GA -- Water stains dot the Moyd household from the bathroom to the bedroom.
Jonathan Moyd, homeowner: “The first thing I thought maybe the roof caved in.”
But, what caved in was water from rain Wednesday night. Jonathan Moyd says this nightmare started around midnight. Once the rain water started to rush in, it wouldn't stop. He tried to get his family out, but at one point, they were trapped.
Jonathan Moyd, homeowner: “My thought was to get my family out. But as I went to the front door, the water was so high we could not get out until the firemen and the rescue squad came.”
After cleaning out the garage, Moyd was able to show us how high the water actually came. Even the backyard was under water. Moyd says one thing that concerns him is that he did not get flood insurance because officials told him that they did not live in a "flood plain."
Tonya Moyd, wife: “We did not get any flood insurance because they told us we were not in a flood area Martinez is not considered a flood area so we did not need flood insurance.”
The family says they are also worried about mold and potential health hazards. Sadly they're not alone - neighbors also spend much of Thursday cleaning up.
A Columbia County engineer says according to the flood insurance rate map kings bridge road area *is not* a flood plane.
