Augusta, GA -- The streets in an Augusta housing complex are calm. That was not the case less than 24 hours ago, when a near riot broke out in Augusta.
Rumors flew following a police shooting, inciting the unrest.
Two deputies shot a suspect on Carver Drive, at the intersection of 15th Street, shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Word about the incident hit the street and an emotional crowd of a couple hundred people gathered outside, at Cherry Tree Crossing.
There were reports of dumpsters being set on fire and guns being discharged. Dozens of deputies were called to the scene to gain control of this volatile situation.
There are still many unanswered questions...like who was shot? and which deputies pulled the trigger.
Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength held a press briefing around 11:00 a.m., Monday morning.
WJBF News Channel 6's Renita Crawford was at the press conference and she has the latest.
