More Fallout From Sex Scandal At Richmond County Middle School

Augusta, GA -- Richmond County Schools Superintendent Doctor Dana Bedden describes it as a kind of love triangle gone wrong. Three employees have already resigned. Monday, he announced punishments for four others.

Dr. Bedden says the investigation started after he got two e-mails alleging sexual activity going on at Spirit Creek Middle School, during the school day. Dr. Bedden says no students were involved or even around when it was going on. The Superintendent says figuring out exactly what "it" is has been difficult, but they know certain employees were doing inappropriate things during the day, he says, interfering with their job. "This was just an unfortunate incident that was really an adult issue but in an inappropriate place and inappropriate time. It should not have happened," said Dr. Bedden.

The big three in the alleged love triangle no longer work for Richmond County. Richmond County Board of Education Public Safety Officer Ronnie Collins resigned in April, but was fired in October from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office because of his involvement. Teacher Denise Ogden resigned. Former principal, Sharon McAlevy, also resigned.

Leaders say the office of the public safety officer was the rendezvous spot, complete with an air mattress. "In the end, we try to deal with what we can prove as opposed to what is sensationalized or what makes for exciting conversation," says Dr.Bedden.

Then Monday, Dr. Bedden handed down punishments for four others directly or indirectly involved. One teacher was suspended and issued a letter of reprimand. The school's graduation coach was given a letter of reprimand and two teachers now have letters of advisement in their file.

"Sometimes people make poor choices, the best we can do is try to deal with them appropriately and make sure we hold people accountable and prevent it from happening again," says Dr. Bedden.

The graduation coach and one of the teachers who were implicated and disciplined still work at Spirit Creek Middle. Dr. Bedden says this was a long and very expensive investigation, and one that could be reopened if more information surfaces.
