According to numerous media reports late Wednesday night, John Smoltz’s career in Atlanta will end on Thursday. MLB.com, espn.com and ajc.com all reported that Smoltz is very close to signing a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.
The reports say Boston is offering Smoltz substantially more money than are the Braves. The 41 year-old Smoltz has spent his entire major league career with Atlanta, winning 210 games and saving 154. He is the winningest pitcher in post-season history.
Smoltz is attempting to come back from off-season shoulder surgery that cut short his 2008 season. The reports cite sources close to Smoltz as saying he will phone the Braves on Thursday morning and inform them that he has decided to sign with Boston.
