PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels struck out nine while allowing two hits over eight innings and Chase Utley smacked a two-run double as the Phillies beat Milwaukee 3-1 in the opener of their National League division series.

The NL East champion Phils did all their scoring in the third inning against losing pitcher Yovanni Gallardo. After Utley’s double, Shane Victorino walked with the bases loaded, forcing in Utley.

Brad Lidge pitched a shaky ninth inning for the save. He allowed a run on two hits plus a walk and a wild pitch and had the tying runs in scoring position before striking out Corey Hart to end it.

It’s the Phillies’ first postseason win since Game 5 of the 1993 World Series.

The Phils host the wild card Brewers in game 2 of this best-of-five series, Thursday night.
