NEW YORK (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have cut struggling pitcher John Smoltz.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein delivered the news to Smoltz on Friday. The 42-year-old righty was designated for assignment, meaning Boston has 10 days to trade or release him.

Smoltz was roughed up by the New York Yankees in a 13-6 loss Thursday night. The defeat left him at 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA in eight starts for Boston.

Smoltz is 212-152 with 154 saves in a career that started in 1988. He left the Atlanta Braves after two decades in the offseason and signed with Boston, hoping he could recover from surgery on his right shoulder.
