COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier doesn’t want to see his team play too conservatively Saturday against Georgia, but he’s not ready to just chunk the ball downfield either.
Spurrier said Tuesday there is a fine line between playing wide open and playing smart. He says he won’t feel bad about playing conservatively if that’s what the Gamecocks need to do to win.
In last week’s 7-3 win over North Carolina State, South Carolina gained fewer yards than any other Southeastern Conference team. Georgia gained just one more yard in a loss at Oklahoma State.
If the history between the teams is any indicator, it will be a defensive struggle again. In the four years Spurrier has been with the Gamecocks, neither team has scored more than 18 points.
