Spurrier: Clemson is biggest game of the year
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Since South Carolina isn’t playing for the
Southeastern Conference title, coach Steve Spurrier says Saturday’s
game against Clemson is the biggest game of the year.
Spurrier says a win over the Gamecocks’ biggest rival can give
them momentum that has been lacking in the past. The Tigers have
won two of three from Spurrier and nine of the last 11 games.
Spurrier has worried about making too much of the rivalry. He
pulled down the “Beat Clemson” signs from the locker room when he
arrived. But he says as long as the Gamecocks aren’t in the SEC
title mix, this is their biggest game of the year.
Spurrier says Chris Smelley will start at quarterback, and says
he has no immediate plans to bring in Stephen Garcia, who is
recovering from the flu.
