BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Ron Cooper, a former collage head coach who has guided the South Carolina defense for the past five years, has been hired as LSU’s new secondary coach.

LSU coach Les Miles said on Wednesday that Cooper has great defensive knowledge, particularly in the secondary.

As South Carolina’s safeties coach in 2008, Cooper assisted with a defense that ranked No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference and No. 2 in the nation in pass defense allowing just 160 yards per game.

Cooper spent the 2003 season as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and 2002 as the secondary coach at Wisconsin. He was the head coach at Eastern Michigan in 1993.

Cooper has coached in six bowl games, including the Outback Bowl this year.
