COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The coach who designed the Florida offense that revolutionized the Southeastern Conference in the 1990s is now pinning most of his hopes to win at South Carolina on his defense.
After Saturday’s 26-13 win over UAB, a disgusted Steve Spurrier said it will be up to his defense to give the Gamecocks (3-2, 0-2 SEC) a chance to beat Mississippi (3-2, 1-1 SEC) and break a six game Southeastern Conference losing streak.
Under first-year defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, South Carolina’s defense is allowing just over 201 yards a game, best in the SEC, and just under 13 points a game. It’s a good thing, considering Spurrier’s offense is averaging barely 21 points a game.
