CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says former starting receiver Xavier Dye has asked for his release so he could transfer.
Swinney spoke Thursday on WCCP-FM. Athletic spokesman Tim Bourret confirmed Swinney’s comments.
Dye began the season as a starter, but dropped a pass against Middle Tennessee. He was moved to second team at practice the next week and did not play in a 30-27 loss at Georgia Tech on Sept. 10.
Swinney says Dye has been a bit inconsistent this season. Bourret says Swinney wanted Dye to remain with the Tigers.
Brandon Clear has replaced Dye in the starting lineup. Dye had been listed as a backup for Saturday’s game with Boston College.
Dye is a 6-foot-5 junior from Greenwood and has 11 career catches for 129 yards and one touchdown.
