COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Benedict football coach Stanley Conner is recovering at a Columbia hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack during his team’s home game against Kentucky State.

Providence Hospitals spokeswoman Megan Wright said Monday that Conner was in good condition. That means his vital signs are stable and within normal ranges, and he is conscious and comfortable.

Conner began feeling ill just before halftime of Saturday’s game and was taken to the Tigers’ locker room then to the hospital.

Assistant coach Brian Wajert led the team in the second half. The Tigers beat Kentucky State 42-35.

Conner is a native of Mobile, Ala., and is in his second year at Benedict after serving as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M.
