So long Lynx…..you’ll be missed!

I’ve always considered October 15,1998 to be one of the most rewarding and memorable days of my sportscasting career. A new team, the Augusta Lynx, was playing its first game against the Jacksonville Lizard Kings. The team asked me if I could handle radio play-by-play duties for opening night. Growing up in Pittsburgh and New Jersey, I saw my share of hockey games and I jumped at the opportunity to call the first game in Augusta Lynx hockey history.
I will never forget the atmosphere that night at James Brown Arena. Believe it or not, more than 7,000 fans packed the building. It was loud…it was exciting…it was what minor league professional sports should be. Many people that night were attending their first hockey game and didn’t know the difference between a blue line and a red line. They didn’t care about knowing the rules of the game. All they cared about that night was coming out and supporting a new team that played a sport many people in this city were not familiar with. It was a special night and I still get goose bumps thinking about that game.
Thoughts of that opening night 10 years ago raced through my head last week when Lynx owners annnounced they were suspending team operations. Augusta became the first team in the history of the ECHL fold during the season. I was at the press conference when Lynx co-owner Jan Burch stepped up to the microphone and begged for someone to help them out financially and save the season. I can tell you that Mrs. Burch’s tears were real. I’ve spoken to her a number of times off camera to know that she loves this city and wanted hockey to survive and thrive in Augusta. Along with her husband, Robert, and co-owner/GM Dan Troutman, this ownership group saved hockey from dying in Augusta two-and-a-half years ago. I hope Lynx fans never forget this fact. Sadly, the money ran out and it all came to an end last week. Many fine people who gave their heart and soul to the organization are now without jobs.
Losing the Lynx is not good for Augusta. I don’t think many people understand the impact minor-league sports can have on a city and its youth. Some of the greatest memories from my childhood revolve around minor-league/professional sporting events. Luckily I had a father who took me to hundreds of minor-league hockey, soccer and baseball games. I remember idolizing these players. One year, while living in Oklahoma, the Tulsa Roughnecks won the NASL soccer championship. We attended just about every home soccer game that year. Shortly after the Roughnecks championship season, financial difficulties doomed the team and league. The Roughnecks were history and a young boy missed the team dearly. I can’t help but think there is more than one young Lynx fan who is feeling the same thing right now.

VH—Nice game last night. After the embarrassment of the Sugar Bowl, glad to see the SEC redeem itself. Will be at Goshen April 5 to pay-off wager. Rock Chalk.
Oh Mr. Mangino I am on for the bet… the Gators will romp all over “Big Game” Bob and the Sooners. Tim Tebow is the best college football player ever and never underestimate the greatness of Urban. I do worry since UF loses their OC and he may be distracted, but great players win games and thats what Tebow will do.
I personally love the SEC adding Kiffin and Chizek. Kiffins wife is hot and neither of them can coach so now us Gator fans have blow off games like the Big 12 has with Iowa State, A&M and Kansas. Yes Kansas.. back to the basement guys.
See the SEC was too good top to bottom. Also Texas Tech will suck again too.
The SEC, like the south, will RISE again… and OU will go down in the BCS.
By the way Nicole Mealing of Augusta State rules. I saw her dominate while at Strom Thurmond- and now she is hotting stride for the Jags. You need to cover them Chris! Especially now that the Lynx be dead.
How in world did you ever stay interested in sports long enough to become a sportscaster?? Minor-league soccer games? Isn’t that called “high school soccer” in most states? The Tulsa Roughnecks? Did anyone ever turn your parents into CYF?
Kansas boy has been awfully quiet since the Jayhawks once again took a stiff uppercut form an A10 team and couldn’t answer the bell. Overrated I suspect.
RIP Lynx . . .
Very sad to hear about the Lynx. Hard to imagine they couldn’t get someone who actually played the game to broadcast their first effort. Of course, you had that suffocating effect as a broadcaster many times. (See, Bobcats, Ohio 1989-1993). Seriously though, hockey is the best sport to see live. In most instances, once you see it in person you are hooked. Now that the SEC is hiring Big 12 rejects, I am sure the below average middle of the pack teams will rapidly approve. Not sure how any SEC fan could express confidence in any bowl game where they aren’t playing the Big 10 (which might spare Richt one last embarrasing loss this year—-maybe). If the crocodiles stay within 2 touchdowns of Boomer Sooner, I will be stunned. If the crocs win, I will carry Vaughn Howell’s bag around Goshen for 18 holes free of charge. See everyone in El Paso for the big pre BCS game. Also a shout out to all arachnid fans. Go spiders!
I am one of those fans that are bummed. Heck when I said Coach Marks should go- I did not realize it could happen and everyone would go with them. Its a terrible loss for Augusta. Great post Chris. Damn Shame.
Meanwhile I have to say Florida should beat Oklahoma.. gotta root for the SEC. The Dawgs will kill the Spartys. Did the Kansas team make a bowl?
By the way can you start a bet and guess how much CC Sabathia will weigh by the end of his Yankee deal? I bet 410.
Keep up the good work Chris… RIP Lynx.
