Georgia on my mind…Parker’s Place…..Knights in shining armor

I can’t believe Oklahoma State is a 6 point favorite over Georgia. I think too many people are drinking the Cowboys kool aid. Mark Richt’s record in road games at Georgia is 30-4. Even more impressive, Richt’s Bulldogs are 9-2 on the road against Top 25 opponents. If you happen to be in Vegas next weekend, take the ‘Dawgs and the points.
Sorry Georgia fans, but if Tim Tebow wins the heisman trophy and leads Florida to another national championship, he will go down as the greatest player in the history of college football. That would give Tebow 3 national titles and 2 heismans….case closed.
Augusta resident Kyle Parker was named Clemson’s starting quarterback last week. That’s right, I said AUGUSTA’s Kyle Parker. His family recently moved from Jacksonville to Evans. You might have heard of Kyle’s mom, Cathy. Recently we profiled her on Newschannel 6. A few years ago, Mrs. Parker received national attention for raising more than $800,000 to build a new turf field for a football team in Alaska. If Kyle’s work ethic is anything like his mom’s, Clemson’s offense is in very good hands.

Week 1 of the high school football season is in the books. Congrats to Grovetown for winning its first football game in school history at Walnut Grove. Coach Holder’s Warriors play their first ever home game in their new stadium this Friday against Langston Hughes.
Barry Bostic did not disappoint in Jefferson County’s season opening win over Laney. The Warriors quarterback accounted for 3 scores and showed why many believe he’s the best player in the Augusta area this season.
After beating Greenbrier 28-7, Evans has now won 14 games in a row. Some might say it’s because the Knights don’t play in one of the state’s strongest regions, but I’m not buying it. Over the past 4 years, Marty Jackson has assembled one of the finest coaching staffs in Georgia. It also helps to have a tremendous running back in Jonathan Finch and a senior quarterback (Troy Griffith) who keeps getting better and better.
Although it didn’t win, South Aiken gave rival Aiken everything it could handle. The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 17-nothing lead before the Hornets stormed back to win 27-17. It’s going to be interesting to see how Coach Wrightenberry’s new wishbone attack at South Aiken will improve as the season goes on.
Hopefully, you’ve been able to catch some of our new Football Friday Night promos. Over the summer, we invited area coaches to tape spots at our station. Over the next several weeks, you’ll see the following coaches star in upcoming FFN commercials: Thomson’s Luther Welsh, North Augusta’ s Dan Pippin, Evans’ Marty Jackson, and Fox Creek’s Russell Schneider. We had a blast shooting these spots and I think viewers are going to enjoy seeing another side of these coaches that you normally wouldn’t see. Here is a link to the first FFN commecial featuring Luther Welsh.
