Garcia’s decision…Beware of Burke County…Prayers for Mr. Harwell

Run, Stephen, run! That’s what Gamecocks fans were saying following South Carolina’s heartbreaking loss at Georgia. It sure looked like Garcia would have had a first down, maybe even a game-winning touchdown, if he would have just ran for it on the Gamecocks final possession.
If you are a Georgia fan, I’d blow up that photo of the two Georgia State Troopers fist-bumping each other in front of Coach Spurrier at the end of the game. That was classic!
Paul Johnson is one of the top 10 coaches in the country. I’d love to know how many major college athletic directors refused to interview Johnson when he was running the option offense at Georgia Southern. Johnson is proving that his option offense can win big-time Division One football games.
After what I’ve seen from Kyle Parker in two games, I’m guessing that Willy Korn won’t be a Clemson Tiger next season.
My Ohio Bobcats won their first game of the season in double-overtime at North Texas State. In 2 weeks, they play at Tennessee. Be afraid Lane Kiffin, be very afraid.
Speaking of Coach Kiffin, good luck at the Swamp on Saturday. My prediction: Florida 66 Tennessee 10. Urban Meyer will be calling timeouts with 4 minutes left just so his team can put up 60.
Ohio State…enough already.
Hope you caught our hilites of Burke County’s win at Statesboro on Football Friday Night. It was a statement win for the Bears and I’m sure it opened more than a few eyes across the state.
Lakeside hasn’t allowed a point this season. The Panthers might just have the best linebackers in the area. FYI…one of their LB’s is Kendal Parker, younger brother of Clemson Quarterback Kyle Parker.
Tough luck team of 2009 has to be South Aiken. The Thoroughbeds very easily could have beaten both Aiken and Silver Bluff. Instead, they ended up losing both games. Coach Wrightenberry’s play calling has been fun to watch this season. Keep your heads up T-Breds!
Week 4 Game of the Week: North Augusta at Richmond Academy. I visited North Augusta last week and they have so many players on the field, you’d think it was a Division-One practice. Coach Pippin kept telling us last spring that he expected his team to do great things in 2009 and he wasn’t kidding. Everyone keeps talking about Matt Hazel, Cam Alston, and LJ Perry, but the best athlete on the team could very well be quarterback Lorenzo Hammonds. Only a Junior, this guy should have several D-1 offers coming his way. As for Friday’s match-up, ARC is undefeated, but it really hasn’t been tested this season. For the Musketeers to make this game interesting in the 4th quarter, they have to cut down on the penalties. I’ve personally witnessed a number of big plays called back this season.
I’m sure this will be a point of emphasis in practice for Coach Hughes this week.
I know that everyone is sending their best wishes to the great Ernie Harwell. Recently, the Washington, Ga native was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. If you want to know what makes this Hall of Fame announcer so special, spend a few minutes and read this tremendous article written by Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle. We are all thinking of you Mr. Harwell!

HawksWife,
Thank you for your comments. I think you might have misinterpreted my comment concerning North Augusta’s football team. In no way was I downgrading the skill level of Matt Hazel, Cam Alston, or LJ Perry. Everyone knows they are 3 of the best football players in the Augusta area and they deserve every accolade they get.
I was just pointing out that if Lorenzo continues along the same path, he has a chance to be just as heavily recruited as his talented senior teammates.
Thanks for reading the Blog!
Best,
Chris
PS We’ve already shot special features with LJ and Matt. Look for them on upcoming episodes of Football Friday Night.
Do you really call yourself a professional? Yes, everyone is talking about Matt Hazel, Cam Alston and L.J. Perry because they are all good athletes!!! Each one has a different role on the North Augusta football team and each one does a VERY good job at their roles. I think it was very unprofessional for you to make such a comment about a group of high school students. They are not asking for the publicity and they certainly are not asking to be compared to anyone on their team. They all simply love the game and they each put their all into it whenever they get on the field. I don’t think any one player is better than the other because they all play different positions. How can you compare a quarter back to a safety, a receiver and a linebacker? You being the sports personality should know better. I know that this is your BLOG and you are entitled to write what you wish, but I must say that for a TV news personality that I once enjoyed watching, I was truly disappointed at your choice of words. Think about the kids before you make comments like this the next time. Yes, North Augusta has a good quarterback, but they also have a good safety, a good receiver and a good linebacker. And might I mention that the three of them are all good students as well. Yes, they work hard on the field and in the classroom. Now that’s what you need to be writing about!!!!
