WJBF-TV News Channel 6 was set up on the Ford Conger Field, where every year, people from all over the nation come to see the Steeplechase, a spectacular horse racing event. But there’s another horse world here in Aiken…our Aiken reporter, Joy Howe has more.

If you’re looking for a reason to come visit, or live in Aiken, there are plenty to be found…It’s been named ‘Best Equestrian Town in the United States.‘ Aiken has also been called a “Distinctive Destination” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Aiken is also one of the top 100 ‘Best Communities for Young People,‘ according to ‘America’s Promise Alliance.‘

Aiken is home to about 30,000 people…some of those have been here their entire lives. They’re often called ‘Aikenites.‘ Others have relocated here, and that’s kind of how this town got its start, and many of the traditions that are still practiced, today. YOUR HOMETOWN: Aiken Gets Back To Its Railrood Roots
Aiken is taking it back to where it all started. The railroad was the heartbeat of the community. In fact, Aiken was named after the man who served as the president of the railroad company. The original train depot once served as the center of town, before it was torn down, in 1954, but plans are underway to rebuild that depot back to its original glory. WJBF-TV News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has more.
