White voters accounted for the bulk of people casting ballots in South Carolina’s presidential contest, and three-quarters of them supported Republican John McCain.  But an Associated Press exit poll also shows a core of white Democrats voted for President-elect Barack Obama.

Republican John McCain claimed Georgia’s 15 electoral votes, beating back Democrat Barack Obama’s drive to turn the GOP stronghold blue. The win in Georgia was bittersweet. McCain already has conceded defeat to Obama, who’s now White House bound. But GOP Senator Saxby Chambliss wasn’t strong enough to avoid a runoff election.  He finished with less than 50% of the vote.

Barack Obama addressed nearly 125,000 people at Chicago’s Grant Park about an hour after his projected victory. He told the crowd his victory proves that America is a place where all things are possible. He also commended John McCain.
