The Forgotten Veterans On Veterans Day

You can’t ignore the numbers. On any given night across the country, 54,000 veterans are living on the streets. The number has gone down slightly in Georgia, but the problem still remains. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop talked with 2 homeless vets who say, they’d serve all over again, but wish more people would help when they come home.

They Fought For Their Country, Now They’re Fighting For Jobs

As we honor our veterans on Wednesday, we’re also faced with a grim reality that many of them…are unemployed. The Aiken County employment office sees as many as 350 vets a month, looking for a job. We spoke with an Iraqi veteran, on her way to Afghanistan, injured, and then left standing in the unemployment line. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.

SC Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer Announces $750,000 Grant To Aid Veterans

A $750,000 federal grant to the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging will lead to a partnership with the Veterans Administration to provide more long-term-care health options for South Carolina’s 410,000 veterans, Lt. Governor André Bauer said Tuesday.

Augusta VA Head: Sterilization Problems Fixed

The director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta says she’s “100 percent sure” the hospital has corrected sterilization problems that may have exposed some patients to infectious body fluids.

Through Their Eyes: Vets Send Off Fort Gordon Soldiers

Hundreds gathered at Fort Gordon today, to say goodbye. Four hundred soldiers from the 35th signal brigade and 67th signal battalion are shipping out. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.

Taking the time out to say thanks. That’s what the folks at American Legion Post 178 did Monday. They fed about 35 soldiers, who have returned from Iraq with injuries.

Helping Veterans With Surfing

Some special surfers get a chance to hang ten and inspire so many. The Association of Amputee Surfers put on its annual “Operation Restoration” this weekend.  It took place at Pismo Beach, California. Eighteen disabled men and women signed up to learn to surf. These new surfers say it’s given them the courage to try new things.

SC Firm Gets Contract To Expand Veterans Burial Site

The next stage of the Fort Jackson National Cemetery for veterans will be built by a South Carolina construction firm. The Department of Veterans Affairs says the contract has been awarded to LW Construction of Charleston, a firm owned by a military veteran.
