Female Polo Players Saddle Up To Fight Breast Cancer

They are women who are saddling up to help save lives. The USPA Ladies Invitational is the second largest women’s polo match in the U.S., and it’s held right here in Aiken. The event is a fundraiser, and these women raise money for a program at University Hospital that provides free mammograms for women in the CSRA.

Closures For Utility Relocation/Intersection Reconstruction; Detours Planned For Walton Way

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GADOT), starting on Monday, and continuing for about 4 months (weather permitting), there will be closures and detours on Walton Way from Dantignac Street to New Balie Street, and the St. Sebastian Way intersection with Osler Lane.

University Hospital Nurses Laid Off

University Hospital has laid off 30 nurses. The layoffs happened after the new cardiovascular unit was opened. According to officials, they consolidated the unit, cutting nursing positions.

Pioneering CSRA Surgeon Dies

Dr. Paul D. Weston, a long time local surgeon, died Wednesday, May 06, 2009. He was the first African-American to be admitted to practice at University Hospital, in 1952. The next year, St. Joseph appointed him to its staff, making him the first black to practice in a private hospital in Augusta, GA.

UPDATED: Augusta Hospital Chaplain From SC killed In Wreck

A truck driver has been charged with vehicular homicide in the death of a hospital chaplain from South Carolina. A Richmond County sheriff’s spokesman said 67-year-old Bill Snyder, a minister in North Augusta, S.C., was killed when the moped he was riding collided with a dump truck.

UPDATED: Elderly Care Home Evacuated Due To Storm Damage

WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that AMARA Healthcare and Rehab on Scott’s Road, off of Peach Orchard Road is being evacuated due to storm damage, and no power. According to WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola, 115-120 residents will be taken to other locations to be cared for.
