The U.S. Postal Service is offering $15,000 buyouts to employees in an effort to cut costs.

It turns out, not even the Post Office is safe from the economic downturn. One less day of mail service could be the solution. So, how soon could this begin? WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop tries to find out.

Postmaster General John Potter says the massive deficits facing the post office could force the agency to cut out one day of mail delivery per week.

With nine days to go before Santa makes his Christmas deliveries, it looked like just about everyone else was at a local Post Office to make sure their deliveries make it before Christmas, too. Monday, December 15th, was the busiest mailing day of the year. Wednesday, the 17th, will be the busiest delivery day.

Up to 7,000 people in northern South Carolina expecting their Social Security checks have not received them.
