Augusta Under Microscope for ADA Violations

Gay Rights Group Dissatisfied With Obama Administration Stance
At least one gay rights group isn’t satisfied with the Obama administration’s stance on a federal marriage law. The Justice Department is defending 1996’s Defense of Marriage Act in court, claiming that a reasonable argument can be made that the law is constitutional. But President Barack Obama still insists he wants the act repealed.

Eighth NC Terror Suspect Believed To Be In Pakistan
The search for an American citizen who’s believed to be part of a North Carolina group of aspiring terrorists is focused overseas. Seven suspects are under arrest, and authorities believe an eighth individual is in Pakistan.
News Of Home-Grown Terrorists In North Carolina Shocks Officials, Neighbors
Federal authorities say they have uncovered another case of so-called “ home-grown” terrorism. In rural North Carolina, seven men are in custody, accused of plotting quote “violent jihad” on foreign targets. Six of the seven are U.S. citizens. ABC News’ T.J. Winick has more.

FBI Anti-Terror Agents Arrest 6 In North Carolina
Officials have charged a North Carolina man with supporting terrorism by recruiting people to fight overseas. Daniel Boyd and six others are charged with providing material support to terrorism. Six suspects have been arrested in the Raleigh, N.C., area.

Rally To Support Former Augusta State Senator
It’s been four years since former State Senator Charles Walker, from Augusta, was sentenced to ten years in Federal Prison on conspiracy, mail fraud, and tax charges. Feds Spike Georgia Law Requiring Citizenship Checks For Voting
The Justice Department has rejected Georgia’s attempt to require prospective voters in the state to provide proof of citizenship. Gov. Sonny Perdue signed the bill last month making Georgia the second state in the nation to require newly registering voters to prove they are U.S. citizens before casting a ballot. Under the Voting Rights Act, the state was required to get preclearance for the measure from the U.S. Department of Justice.

GA Juvenile Justice Department Released from Federal Monitoring
After 11 years, the United States Department of Justice has ended monitoring of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. Major service improvements in the areas of education, medical, mental health, protection from harm and quality assurance resulted in the final closure of the longstanding 1998 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Attorney General Holder: Terrorists Won’t Be Set Free
Attorney General Eric Holder says the United States will not release anyone considered a terrorist into the country. Holder was testifying Thursday at a Senate hearing. He faced questions from lawmakers about his plans for closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center by January 2010.
