Last Weekend to Experience “Powers of Nature” at SC State Museum
South Carolinians know first-hand about the powers of nature. It was 20 years ago this month that Hurricane Hugo slammed into the state. And Hugo is one of the hurricanes featured in “Powers of Nature”, a special exhibit at the State Museum in Columbia that looks at the causes and effects of natural disasters. It has sections on hurricanes, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, earthquakes, blizzards and volcanoes. WJBF News Channel 6’s SC Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, has more.

Beech Island Storm Victims Got Free Haircuts On Wednesday
They are cutting into the setbacks the Beech Island community faced. The Beech Island Church of Christ is hosting a week-long event that’s meant to reach out to the community that was hit by tornadoes, earlier this year. Wednesday, free haircuts were given by the Kenneth Shuler salon. For 5 hours, stylists cut off hair…and offered a little hope.

Potentially Severe Weather Headed To CSRA On Monday Afternoon

Storms, Possible Tornadoes, Rumble Through South; 1 Killed
Severe thunderstorms that rumbled across the Southeast killed one person, knocked out power to thousands in Alabama and Georgia and spawned several possible tornadoes. The Jones County coroner says a 46-year-old woman in Laurel, Miss., was killed Sunday when a tree fell on her while she was standing outside her home. Another person in the county was injured.

POLL: Should Augusta Have A Full-Time EMA Director?
Is the job of Richmond County EMA Director too important to be part-time? As we exclusively reported, Monday, Augusta Mayor Pro-Tem Alvin Mason says…it is time the city had a full-time Emergency Management Director. Fire Chief Howard Willis has been serving in the role, while also running the Fire Department. In light of the tornados, earlier this month, other city leaders are now making the call to change things in the EMA office.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner Tours Storm Ravaged Areas
State Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine estimates $60 million in damage, statewide, from this past weekend’s storms. He says a large portion of that is from Augusta. Racing For Cover: Tornado Victims Scramble To Beat Rain
Monday became a race against the weather for people still trying to pick through the rubble to find belongings, in Aiken County. Hundreds woke up to a disaster, early Saturday morning. Beech Island, and the surrounding areas were the hardest hit. Emergency crews say half a dozen homes are destroyed. The clean-up is still in the early stages, and now comes the news that another storm is rolling in. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.
